Lighting for Feet Pics: Phone Setups That Work

Window light, a cheap ring light and the settings that stop grainy, yellow photos.

Most bad feet pics are a light problem, not a camera problem. Fix the light and a three-year-old phone looks great.

Free: a window

  • Sit beside a window, not facing it. Side light shows the shape of arches and toes.
  • Cloudy days and indirect light are the easiest. Hard sun makes sharp shadows and shiny spots.
  • Hang a thin white curtain or sheet over a sunny window to soften it.
  • Turn off the room lights. Mixing yellow bulbs with daylight gives odd colors.

Cheap: a ring light or a lamp

  • A 10 to 12 inch ring light covers close-ups of soles and toes.
  • Place it about 45 degrees to one side and a little above, not straight on. Straight-on light flattens the foot.
  • Use the daylight or neutral setting so skin and polish keep their real color.
  • A white wall, poster board or bedsheet on the other side bounces light into the shadows.

Phone settings

  • Tap the screen on the foot to focus, then slide the brightness down a little if skin looks washed out.
  • Skip the flash. It flattens shape and makes skin shiny.
  • Shoot in the main (1x) lens for close-ups. Digital zoom adds grain.
  • Wipe the lens. A smudge makes the whole photo look hazy.

Common questions

What is the best light for feet pics?

Soft side light from a window on a cloudy day, or a ring light set to daylight about 45 degrees to one side.

Do I need a ring light to sell feet pics?

No. A window works. A small ring light helps for night shoots and close-ups.

Why do my feet pics look yellow?

Warm room bulbs. Turn them off and use daylight or a ring light on its daylight setting.
